Josie Cotton has found a voice for that which does not want to be heard.
Being unhinged, she releases the plastic and metaphorical potential of notes.
The destructive energy in her songwriting generates an aesthetic of burning,
compressing and ripping, exposing the crack that links art and life.
The pedestal is taken away, the authority of good music is questioned, allowing
this album to develop in space through modularity, redundancy and expansion.
Then through a process of subtraction or condensation, this collection of
songs achieves pure sound which both replaces form and answers a number
of questions. The deformed spiraling and her unstable emotions make it possible
to distance oneself from appearances and tackle the reflexive nature " as
art as art as art ".
Her desperate vision is a collection of miniature reproductions, like a
portable museum handed over to History. The grid that is implanted in her
musical universe functions as a symbol of confinement in favor of transforming
man and his ability to advance in the absence of content. Half-animal, half-human,
her hallucinations, dream psychosis and idiocy all reveal the power of her
repression. Between beauty and anxiety, fascination and terror, her interior
world exposes a feeling which causes consciousness to withdraw and brings
about a kind of ethereal nausea.
Can music be defined as that which stays in the mind's ear when the compositions
risk coming to an end and enter into the process of altering themselves,
destroying themselves and distancing themselves to the point where they
disappear as audible objects?
Melody and lyrics are abandoned, celebrating ugliness as the betrayal of
human kind. Her dematerialization profoundly changes modern utopia, manifesting
a spirituality that is idealized with sarcasm, irreverence and subduction.
By dissociating the songs from the music, both empty and full, she lacks
a fundamental point, like a threshhold, a limit, a beginning or an end.
Directly linked with sex, the archaic violence returning to instinct, Josie's
songs are evolutionary and irrational in their precariousness and ecto-morphism.
